An outdoor kids' birthday in Berlin: ideas for an afternoon in the Kiez

An outdoor kids' birthday is the dream for many parents — and the challenge: it should be exciting without you having to organise the whole afternoon. Here are a few ideas for a birthday in the fresh air in Berlin that take little effort and still stay in memory for a long time.

What carries an outdoor birthday

Three things make an outdoor kids' birthday easy: a clear activity the kids can dive into; a place that works without much preparation; and a plan for hunger and weather. Once that is in place, the rest almost runs by itself.

Ideas for outdoors

A few classics that always work: a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt where the kids solve puzzles themselves; a picnic in the park with simple games; a trip to an adventure playground or a climbing park. The advantage of a scavenger hunt: it gives the afternoon a story and a goal — the kids are busy without anyone having to keep entertaining them.

Rixdorf as a birthday backdrop

If it is to be a scavenger hunt, the Bohemian Village in Rixdorf makes a lovely backdrop: low-traffic lanes, old courtyards, a playground on Richardplatz and many cafés around it. With Localnauts this becomes a walkable time-travel to the year 1737 — the birthday crew solves puzzles at ten stations, takes on roles and finds the lost chest in the end. For kids aged 8 to 12, about 90 to 120 minutes, no app.

Planned practically

One game code covers a team of 2 to 6 kids (ideal 4–5 per device). So for 10 kids you take two codes, for a bigger group more accordingly — from three codes it gets cheaper per code. Tip: the birthday child leads the first leg as navigator. Everything runs in the browser, no download and no time limit — the game code stays valid until you start.

And if it rains? No problem: bring an umbrella (you can hold it over the tablet or phone), take shelter for a moment or pause — your progress is saved and you continue later.

Afterwards: stop for a bite

To wind down, a café is worth it. Around Richardplatz there are plenty of family-friendly spots, from a currywurst kiosk to an ice cream shop. We gathered our favourites in a separate magazine post: Discovering Rixdorf with kids — the route and where to stop.

Frequently asked

Where can you hold an outdoor kids' birthday in Berlin?

Popular options are parks, adventure playgrounds, climbing parks — and scavenger hunts in the neighbourhood. In the Bohemian Village in Rixdorf (Berlin-Neukölln), Localnauts combines both: a GPS scavenger hunt through low-traffic lanes with a playground and cafés around it, for kids aged 8 to 12.

How many kids fit into a scavenger hunt?

One game code covers a team of 2 to 6 kids (ideal 4–5 per device). For bigger birthdays you split into several teams and buy more game codes accordingly — from three codes it gets cheaper per code.

What does a scavenger hunt for a kids' birthday cost?

Localnauts costs 25 € per game code (one team of 2 to 6 kids, one device). No subscription, no expiry date. For groups there is a volume discount from three game codes.

What if it rains on the birthday?

In light to moderate rain it is very doable: bring an umbrella (hold it over the tablet too), take shelter for a moment or pause. Your progress is saved and you continue later or the next day.
