Autumn holidays in Berlin with kids: ideas for the outdoors
The autumn holidays 2026 in Berlin run from 19 to 31 October 2026. The last school day before them is Friday 16 October, the first one after is Monday 2 November. Almost two weeks, then, in which the weather does whatever it likes. Here are outdoor ideas that hold up under a grey sky too.
Outdoors when it gets dark earlier
The clocks go back on the night of 25 October. Before that it gets dark around 6 pm, after it an hour earlier. That moves the outing into the morning and early afternoon and makes planning simpler: one destination, a few hours, back before the street lamps come on. On Tempelhofer Feld, autumn is kite season, because the wind has a clear run there. In Britzer Garten and the Gardens of the World there are leaves to kick through. And the Hasenheide animal park right in Neukölln costs nothing: goats, sheep and birds to watch.
An adventure for one afternoon
Sometimes one destination for half a day is enough. With Localnauts the Bohemian Village of Rixdorf becomes a walkable time journey to the year 1737: a crew of 2 to 6 kids aged 8 to 12 solves puzzles at ten stations, takes on roles and searches for a lost chest. The route is 2.5 km long, one run takes 120 to 180 minutes including the intro and breaks. Localnauts runs as a web app in the browser, nothing to download from an app store.
Why the holidays suit it
In the holidays there is no fixed date and no set time. The game code fits that: it is valid until you activate it. You start spontaneously, whenever you like, and set your own pace. Handy when you have visitors too — cousins or holiday guests explore a corner of Berlin many people have never seen, and pick up a piece of city history along the way.
When it rains
In light rain an umbrella is enough, and you can hold it over the tablet. In heavier rain you take shelter for a moment or pause: the game state stays saved on the device, and you carry on later or the next day. The last holiday day is 31 October
The autumn holidays end on Halloween. If you are spending the day outdoors anyway, the two go together. It is also the last day the whole Rixdorf route is free in the beta.
Holidays are not about having a programme every day, they are about giving kids the time to discover something themselves.
