Summer holidays in Berlin with kids: ideas for the outdoors
Six weeks of summer holidays — in Berlin from 9 July to 22 August 2026. At some point the question always comes: what on earth do we do today? Here is a collection of outdoor ideas, most of them free or cheap, many right in and around Neukölln. So you don't have to rack your brain every morning.
Out and about: parks, water, animals
In summer, Berlin is one big playground. On Tempelhofer Feld kids cycle, fly kites and have endless space. Outdoor pools and lakes nearby cool everyone down. And right in Neukölln sits the small Hasenheide animal park — free, with goats, sheep and birds to watch and feed. For a greener day: Britzer Garten or the Gardens of the World.
Through the summer for free
On a budget you will still find plenty: the Berlin summer holiday calendar bundles over 200 often free activities for kids and teens. The Berlin family portal and sites like berlinmitkind collect events by day and district. And the city libraries usually run a summer reading club where reading turns into a friendly competition.
When the walls start closing in at home
Sometimes you just need a small half-day adventure. A scavenger hunt in your own neighbourhood is ideal: the kids are outside, on the move and solving puzzles themselves. With Localnauts, the Bohemian Village in Rixdorf becomes a walkable time-travel to the year 1737 — a crew of 2 to 6 kids (ages 8 to 12) solves puzzles at ten stations, takes on roles and finds the lost chest at the end. Around 90 to 120 minutes, no app, straight in the browser.
Why it fits the holidays especially
Holidays mean no fixed date, no set time. That's exactly what Localnauts is built for — the game code stays valid until you activate it, you start whenever you like and set your own pace. Perfect when you have visitors too: cousins or visiting kids explore a corner of Berlin many don't know yet — and pick up the history of their own city along the way.
And if it rains? For light rain an umbrella is enough (you can hold it over the tablet too); otherwise take cover briefly or pause — your progress is saved and you continue later.
If you are out in Rixdorf, a café afterwards is worth it: we collected our favourite spots around Richardplatz in a separate piece (Discovering Rixdorf with kids). And if there's a birthday during the holidays, you'll find ideas in Outdoor kids' birthday in Berlin.
Summer holidays aren't about entertaining kids every day — they're about giving them room to discover things themselves.
